Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables
Dead Kennedys · Hardcore Punk
Dead Kennedys' 1980 debut was cut cheaply and fast: London's Cherry Red label advanced roughly $10,000 to make the record happen, guitarist East Bay Ray paid each bandmate $1,000 up front ("I figured that was the last money we were ever going to see"), and the album itself was tracked for about $6,000 with engineers Oliver DiCicco and John Cuniberti and co-producer credited only as "Norm." Ray has said he still holds the original 16-track masters and handwritten session sheets in his own possession decades later, underscoring how DIY and undocumented the sessions were even as the record became a foundational hardcore-punk text. Where U.S. labels were wary of punk, the LP charted at UK No. 33 in September 1980, and Jello Biafra's mordant political satire on "Holiday in Cambodia" and "Kill the Poor" made it one of the most quoted, covered and studied punk debuts of the decade.
