The Joshua Tree
U2 · Rock
Recorded across three home-studio-style locations -- guitarist The Edge's house, bassist Adam Clayton's home, and Dublin's Windmill Lane Studios -- with returning producers Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois and, for the first time, engineer Flood (fresh off Nick Cave sessions). 'Where the Streets Have No Name' proved so difficult to record, thanks to its shifting time signatures, that Eno estimated it consumed roughly 40% of the album's total studio time and, in frustration, allegedly tried to 'accidentally' erase the master tapes before engineer Pat McCarthy stopped him. The finished album topped both the US and UK charts and is often cited as the moment U2 graduated from arena act to global institution.
