Like a Virgin

Madonna · Pop/Dance

Recorded in mid-1984 at New York's Power Station with Chic's Nile Rodgers, who brought his own rhythm section (Bernard Edwards on bass, Tony Thompson on drums) to give Madonna's dance-pop a tougher, live-band sound over her earlier drum-machine debut. Engineer Jason Corsaro pushed for 12-bit digital recording (a Sony 3324 24-track) and a simultaneous CD/vinyl release -- reportedly a first -- while closely following Stephen Bray's original cassette demos; Rodgers has said he deliberately aimed to make 'the artist's next record, not their last one,' which is why the sound still felt ahead of the trends six months later when it finally shipped.
