Madonna's self-titled debut grew from a four-song dance demo she and Stephen Bray shopped around downtown NYC clubs; DJ Mark Kamins got 'Everybody' played at Danceteria and brought her to Sire Records president Seymour Stein, who signed her off the strength of the single alone. Warner Bros. producer Reggie Lucas cut most of the album, but Madonna grew unhappy with his mixes and brought in her boyfriend, club DJ John 'Jellybean' Benitez, to remix and finish the record, built around the era's new LinnDrum, Moog bass and Oberheim OB-X gear. It went five-times platinum in the US and is now widely regarded as one of the definitive dance-pop debuts of the decade.
