Nebraska

Bruce Springsteen · Folk Rock/Lo-Fi

Springsteen recorded these songs alone on a 4-track cassette recorder in the bedroom of his home in Colts Neck, New Jersey, intending them only as demos for the E Street Band to re-record; when the full-band versions felt wrong for the material, he released the original home tapes largely as-is. Inspired by Flannery O'Connor's short stories and his own childhood memories, the stark, lo-fi record -- titled after killer Charles Starkweather on its title track -- is now recognized as one of the first major-artist DIY home recordings and a significant influence on indie and underground rock; some of its 17 recorded songs later surfaced in full-band form on Born in the U.S.A.
