On the Nile
The Egyptian Lover · Electro-Funk
L.A. DJ Greg Broussard's debut as the Egyptian Lover built 'Egypt, Egypt' out of a half-speed reworking of Afrika Bambaataa's 'Planet Rock' riff and used vocoder-heavy 'robot voice' electronics to conjure a fantasy escape from the Compton neighborhood he grew up in, becoming a foundational West Coast electro-funk record that influenced Egyptian Lover's own later G-funk-adjacent Los Angeles peers.
