Recorded January-July 1987 across studios in New Jersey, Los Angeles and New York, Tunnel of Love found Springsteen turning inward, largely playing the instruments himself with drum machines and synthesizers rather than leaning on the full E Street Band, writing about the difficulty of mature love as his marriage to Julianne Phillips was falling apart. 'Brilliant Disguise' -- described as a heart-wrenching song about never truly knowing someone -- became one of his biggest hit singles, and the title track won the Grammy for Best Rock Vocal Performance, Solo. Rolling Stone later ranked it among the 100 best albums of the 1980s.
