Born Eiko Kawashima on 31 August 1961 in Yamato, Kanagawa Prefecture, Anri is a Japanese pop singer who became one of the defining voices of the city pop movement. She debuted in 1978 with 'Oribia o Kikinagara', written by Amii Ozaki, and became a bestselling album artist through the 1980s. Her signature 1983 album Timely!! topped the Oricon chart and produced the hits 'Cat's Eye' (the first opening theme of the 1983 Cat's Eye anime) and 'Kanashimi ga Tomaranai'. Other hits including 'Summer Candles' and 'Dolphin Ring' became Japanese wedding-reception standards, and her city pop catalogue has found renewed international popularity through sampling by vaporwave and future funk artists.
