American hip-hop and punk group formed in New York City in 1981, evolving from the hardcore band the Young Aborigines. The classic trio of Michael "Mike D" Diamond, Adam "MCA" Yauch and Adam "Ad-Rock" Horovitz made a full transition from hardcore punk to hip-hop after 1983's "Cooky Puss" single. Touring with Madonna in 1985 raised their profile, and their 1986 debut Licensed to Ill (produced with Rick Rubin) became the first rap album to top the Billboard 200. Their 1989 follow-up Paul's Boutique, built almost entirely from samples with the Dust Brothers, was a commercial disappointment on release but is now regarded as a landmark sampling-era classic.
