Jamaican reggae group formed in Kingston's Waterhouse district in 1972 as Uhuru, with Derrick "Duckie" Simpson its sole constant member across many lineup changes. The definitive early-1980s trio -- Simpson, singer Michael Rose and American vocalist Sandra "Puma" Jones -- worked extensively with rhythm section Sly and Robbie, signed to Island Records in 1980, and became the era's most acclaimed roots-reggae act, with 1981's Red ranked among Rolling Stone's 100 greatest albums of the 1980s. Their 1983 album Anthem won the first-ever Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album.
