Born Yvette Marie Stevens on March 23, 1953 on Chicago's South Side, she was discovered singing around Chicago clubs in 1972 and became lead vocalist of the R&B/funk band Rufus the following year, recording hits including "Tell Me Something Good" and "Sweet Thing." She launched a parallel solo career in 1978 with her Warner Bros. debut Chaka, which featured her signature song "I'm Every Woman."
