British singer-songwriter and pianist, born Reginald Kenneth Dwight on March 25, 1947 in Pinner, Middlesex, England. A piano prodigy who won a Royal Academy of Music junior scholarship at age 11, he played in the semi-professional band Bluesology through the 1960s before adopting the stage name Elton John (borrowed from Bluesology members Elton Dean and Long John Baldry) and beginning his decades-long songwriting partnership with lyricist Bernie Taupin in 1967. After a run of blockbuster 1970s albums including Goodbye Yellow Brick Road (1973), John continued releasing new studio albums throughout the 1980s — including 21 at 33 (1980), Too Low for Zero (1983, featuring "I'm Still Standing") and Sleeping with the Past (1989) — while touring internationally and collaborating widely. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994 and knighted in 1998.
