Guns N' Roses are an American hard rock band formed in Los Angeles in March 1985, combining members of L.A. Guns (guitarist Tracii Guns, bassist Ole Beich, drummer Rob Gardner) and Hollywood Rose (vocalist Axl Rose, guitarist Izzy Stradlin). The classic lineup stabilised with Rose, Stradlin, lead guitarist Slash, bassist Duff McKagan and drummer Steven Adler, and after signing to Geffen Records the band released Appetite for Destruction on 21 July 1987, an album that eventually sold over 17 million copies in the US and produced the number-one single "Sweet Child o' Mine." The stripped-down covers/originals EP G N' R Lies followed in 1988. Known for volatile live shows and off-stage controversy, the band is regarded as one of the most influential hard rock acts of its era and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012.
