Herbert Jeffrey "Herbie" Hancock (born 12 April 1940 in Chicago, Illinois) is an American jazz keyboardist, bandleader and composer. A child prodigy who performed a Mozart concerto with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra at age 11, he was discovered by trumpeter Donald Byrd and signed to Blue Note Records, releasing his 1963 debut Takin' Off with the hit "Watermelon Man." He joined the Miles Davis Quintet from 1963-1968, helping define the post-bop sound alongside Wayne Shorter, Ron Carter and Tony Williams. In the 1970s he pivoted to jazz-funk fusion, forming the Headhunters and scoring the first platinum jazz album with Head Hunters (1973). His 1983 album Future Shock, produced with Bill Laswell, yielded the electro-funk landmark "Rockit" and won a Grammy for Best R&B Instrumental Performance, bringing turntablism and electro production to mainstream audiences.
