American punk rock band formed in Saint Paul, Minnesota in 1979 by guitarist/vocalist Bob Mould, bassist Greg Norton and drummer/vocalist Grant Hart, who met at the Cheapo Records store on Grand Avenue. A cornerstone of the Minneapolis-Saint Paul hardcore scene playing venues like Jay's Longhorn Bar and First Avenue, the trio signed to SST Records in 1983 and moved from raw hardcore punk into more melodic, structurally ambitious alternative rock on albums like Zen Arcade.
