Make Up City was Casiopea's third studio album and the first to feature drummer Akira Jimbo, a college student recruited to replace founding drummer Takashi Sasaki just months after the band's live album Thunder Live; the record arrived shortly after that lineup change and became one of the group's most celebrated 'internationally released' outings, per AllMusic. Formed in 1976 by guitarist Issei Noro and bassist Tetsuo Sakurai, Casiopea had already built a reputation on complex fusion compositions and technical interplay after their Alfa Records debut, and Make Up City -- fronted by Noro's guitar work and Minoru Mukaiya's keyboards -- helped cement that formula ahead of the internationally beloved 1982 live album Mint Jams, which Noro later credited with opening the door to the band's first European tour.
