John Lennon (1940-1980), co-founder and co-lead vocalist of the Beatles, began releasing avant-garde and solo work with his second wife Yoko Ono in 1968, forming the Plastic Ono Band in 1969. After a five-year hiatus from recording to raise their son Sean, Lennon returned in 1980 with Double Fantasy, a collaborative album with Ono recorded at the Hit Factory in New York and released on the newly formed Geffen Records on November 17, 1980. The album alternated songs by Lennon and Ono and won the 1981 Grammy Award for Album of the Year; Lennon was shot and killed by Mark David Chapman three weeks after its release.
