English post-punk band formed in Salford/Manchester in 1976 (as Warsaw), comprising singer Ian Curtis, guitarist Bernard Sumner, bassist Peter Hook and drummer Stephen Morris. Signed to Tony Wilson's Factory Records and paired with maverick producer Martin Hannett, they turned raw punk energy into the icy, dub-influenced, effects-laden sound of 1979's Unknown Pleasures and 1980's Closer; Curtis's suicide in May 1980, days before their first US tour, cut the band short, and the surviving members regrouped as New Order.

Ian Curtis

Frontman, lyricist, and central visual presence whose haunting baritone vocals, poetic existential lyrics, and erratic 'epileptic dance' live style defined post-punk. Wrote lyrics for 'Disorder', 'She's Lost Control', and 'Love Will Tear Us Apart' before his death in May 1980.

Bernard Sumner

Guitar, Synthesizers, Keyboards

1976-1980

Primary guitarist and keyboardist whose arpeggiated, razor-sharp Shergold guitar lines and ARP Omni-2 synthesizer textures gave Joy Division their melancholic melodic spine. Co-founded New Order following Curtis's death.

Peter Hook

Innovative bassist who used a Yamaha BB1200 and Electro-Harmonix Chorus to play high-register lead basslines that drove songs like 'Transmission' and 'Twenty Four Hours', pioneering lead bass in post-punk.

Stephen Morris

1977-1980

Drummer whose inhumanly precise, machine-like rhythm style was isolated drum-by-drum by producer Martin Hannett at Strawberry Studios, blending acoustic drums with early Synare electronic drum pads.
