1 album / credit record(s) · Post-Punk

English post-punk group formed in Manchester in 1977 by Howard Devoto immediately after his departure from the Buzzcocks, pairing his paranoid, literate lyrics with a musically ambitious sound that fused punk energy with synths, dub bass and prog-inflected arrangement. Guitarist John McGeoch's angular, chorus-pedal playing was central to the band's first three albums, including The Correct Use of Soap (1980), produced by Joy Division collaborator Martin Hannett; McGeoch departed later that year to join Siouxsie and the Banshees. Devoto disbanded the group in 1981 after a fourth album, though Magazine reunited for live shows and a fifth studio album decades later.
