Mantronix was a New York electro-hop duo formed in 1984 by British-born DJ/producer Kurtis Mantronik and rapper MC Tee. Discovered by Sleeping Bag Records founder Will Socolov after a demo of 'Fresh Is the Word,' Mantronik built the group's debut The Album (1985) largely alone on an 8-track at Al Cohen Studios, using a Roland TR-808 kept deliberately raw rather than heavily processed. Mantronik has described the sessions as spur-of-the-moment beatmaking rather than planned songwriting, and his dense, machine-precise drum programming and scratch-heavy production on The Album (1985), Music Madness (1986), and In Full Effect (1988, MC Tee's final album with the group) became a key bridge between New York electro and the more mechanical strains of Detroit techno.
