1 album / credit record(s) · Hardcore Punk/Straight Edge

American hardcore punk band formed in Washington, D.C. in 1980 by singer Ian MacKaye and drummer Jeff Nelson, whose early singles 'Straight Edge' and 'Out of Step' coined and defined the drug-and-alcohol-free 'straight edge' movement within punk. The band briefly broke up in 1982 after guitarist Lyle Preslar left for college, but reformed as a five-piece with new bassist Steve Hansgen (Brian Baker shifting to second guitar) to record their only full-length album, Out of Step (1983), at Don Zientara's Inner Ear Studio. MacKaye and Nelson co-founded the band's label, Dischord Records, which remained a cornerstone of the D.C. hardcore scene long after Minor Threat disbanded in 1983.
