Formed in Manchester in 1980 by Bernard Sumner, Peter Hook and Stephen Morris, the surviving members of Joy Division after singer Ian Curtis's suicide that May; keyboardist Gillian Gilbert (Morris's girlfriend) joined that October to complete the classic lineup. Flagship band of Tony Wilson's Factory Records and the Hacienda nightclub, New Order fused post-punk with electronic dance music, most famously on 'Blue Monday' (1983), the best-selling 12-inch single of all time, working closely with sleeve designer Peter Saville and producer Martin Hannett on their transition from Movement's Joy Division-indebted sound into synth-driven club music.
