American singer-songwriter born Paul Frederic Simon on October 13, 1941, in Newark, New Jersey, and raised in Queens, New York. He rose to fame as one half of the folk-rock duo Simon & Garfunkel with childhood friend Art Garfunkel before pursuing a solo career after their 1970 breakup. His 1980s output included One-Trick Pony (1980) and the introspective Hearts and Bones (1983), before 1986's Graceland -- recorded largely with South African musicians and blending pop with mbaqanga and township jive -- became his most celebrated and commercially successful solo album.
