1 album / credit record(s) · Post-Punk

English post-punk group formed in London in 1978 by John Lydon (formerly Johnny Rotten of the Sex Pistols) with guitarist Keith Levene, bassist Jah Wobble and drummer Jim Walker, deliberately positioned as an anti-band 'company' rather than a conventional rock group. After Wobble's 1980 departure stripped away the band's signature dub bassline sound, drummer Martin Atkins joined for the stark, percussion-led The Flowers of Romance (1981), one of post-punk's most radical experiments. The band's lineup fractured repeatedly through the 1980s -- Levene left acrimoniously after 1983's Commercial Zone -- leaving Lydon as the only constant member through the decade's later, more commercially-minded PiL albums.

Band Lineup & Member Profiles

Vocals, founder
1978-1993, 2009-present
Former Sex Pistols frontman (as Johnny Rotten) who founded PiL as a deliberate rejection of conventional band structure; the only member present on every PiL release.
Guitar, synths
1978-1983
Co-founder whose angular guitar and synth textures shaped PiL's early sound through Flowers of Romance before an acrimonious split following Commercial Zone.
Bass
1978-1980
Original bassist whose dub-influenced basslines defined PiL's early sound on Metal Box; his 1980 departure forced the near-bassless approach of Flowers of Romance.
Drums
1979-1981 (later reunions)
Drummer recruited after Jah Wobble's exit whose massive, reverb-heavy playing became the rhythmic foundation of The Flowers of Romance.
