Formed in London in 1970 by Freddie Mercury (vocals, piano), Brian May (guitar) and Roger Taylor (drums), who had played together in the band Smile; bassist John Deacon completed the classic lineup in 1971. Queen's operatic ambition and genre-hopping (glam, prog, disco, arena rock) made them one of the biggest stadium acts of the 1980s, capped by a career-defining 20-minute set at Live Aid in July 1985 widely rated one of the greatest live performances in rock history.
