Rick James (born James Ambrose Johnson Jr., February 1, 1948, Buffalo, New York) began singing on Buffalo street corners before fleeing to Toronto in 1964, where he formed the Mynah Birds with a young Neil Young. Returning to the US, he signed with Motown's Gordy Records and broke through with 1978's Come Get It!, then defined early-80s 'punk-funk' with 1981's Street Songs and its hit 'Super Freak.' He remained one of funk's most flamboyant and influential bandleaders through the decade.
