Shalamar are an American R&B and soul vocal group formed in Los Angeles in 1977 by Soul Train booking agent Dick Griffey and show producer Don Cornelius, initially built around Soul Train dancers, and released on Griffey's SOLAR Records. The group's classic lineup of Jody Watley, Jeffrey Daniel, and Howard Hewett produced a run of gold and platinum albums in the early 1980s, including Three for Love (1980) and Friends (1982), and were credited with helping introduce 'body-popping' dance style to the UK — Jeffrey Daniel's 1982 Top of the Pops performance of the moonwalk-style 'backslide' predated Michael Jackson's famous 1983 debut of the move.
