American thrash metal band formed in Huntington Park, California in 1981 by guitarists Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman. Signed by Def Jam's Rick Rubin after he saw them at New York's The Ritz in 1985, Slayer became the most extreme member of thrash's 'Big Four' (alongside Metallica, Megadeth and Anthrax); their 1986 album Reign in Blood, stripped nearly bare of reverb and delivered in under 29 minutes, is widely considered the genre's definitive statement.
