Born Stephen Fain Earle on January 17, 1955 at Fort Monroe, Virginia and raised mainly around San Antonio, Texas, Earle moved to Nashville as a teenager to pursue songwriting, mentored by Townes Van Zandt and Guy Clark. His 1986 MCA debut Guitar Town, produced by Tony Brown and Emory Gordy Jr., topped the Billboard country albums chart and is regarded as a founding record of the alt-country/Americana movement.
