English rock trio (Sting, Andy Summers, Stewart Copeland) formed in London in 1977, fusing punk energy with reggae rhythms and jazz-informed musicianship into one of the era's most commercially dominant sounds. By 1983's Synchronicity -- recorded at George Martin's AIR Studios on Montserrat amid severe interpersonal conflict among the three members -- the band had become the world's biggest rock act.
