Whodini formed in Brooklyn, New York in 1982 around vocalist/lyricist Jalil Hutchins, co-vocalist John 'Ecstasy' Fletcher and turntablist Drew 'Grandmaster Dee' Carter, and was managed by Russell Simmons. Signed to Jive Records, the trio was among the first rap groups to blend hip-hop with R&B and to earn national crossover attention, largely produced by Larry Smith. Their synth-driven sound on Escape (1984) helped make it one of the first hip-hop albums certified platinum.
