Vince Clarke's inventive synth programming and Alison Moyet's soulful vocals made Yazoo's debut a landmark of early-80s electronic pop. Recorded in rushed early-morning sessions (5-11am) at engineer Eric Radcliffe's Blackwing Studios in London, the same room where Clarke had cut Depeche Mode's Speak & Spell, the album was deliberately unpolished; Clarke later described its charm as 'naivety,' with many tracks built from only eight or nine sound elements. Preceded by UK top-three singles 'Only You' and 'Don't Go,' it reached #2 on the UK Albums Chart and went platinum in both the UK and US, while a Francois Kevorkian club remix of 'Situation' (originally a UK B-side) topped Billboard's Club Play chart in North America.
