Ohio funk band led by singer/multi-instrumentalist Roger Troutman, formed with brothers Larry, Lester and Terry (Zapp) Troutman in Dayton, Ohio -- part of the same funk-rich Dayton scene that produced Ohio Players and Slave. Signed to Warner Bros. after Parliament-Funkadelic leader George Clinton championed Roger's demo of 'More Bounce to the Ounce,' the band's Bootsy Collins-produced 1980 debut made Roger's talk-box vocal a genre signature; the group charted steadily through the decade (Zapp II, Zapp III, The New Zapp IV U, Zapp Vibe) while Roger also released acclaimed solo albums as "Roger." Zapp's grooves, especially 'More Bounce to the Ounce' and 'Computer Love,' became foundational samples for West Coast hip-hop and G-funk in the 1990s (Dr. Dre, 2Pac, Above the Law). Roger Troutman was shot and killed by brother Larry in 1999.
