American electro-funk and hip-hop ensemble led by South Bronx DJ Afrika Bambaataa (born Lance Taylor, 1957-2026), a former Black Spades gang warlord who founded the Universal Zulu Nation and became one of hip-hop's originating DJs. Alongside rapping crew Soulsonic Force -- Mr. Biggs (Ellis Williams), Pow Wow (Robert Darrell Allen), and The G.L.O.B.E. (John Miller), with DJ Jazzy Jay -- Bambaataa released the genre-defining 1982 single 'Planet Rock' with producer Arthur Baker, fusing a Kraftwerk 'Trans-Europe Express' synth hook and 'Numbers' drum pattern with funk and early hip-hop, effectively founding the electro-funk genre and setting the template for the group's sole studio album, Planet Rock: The Album (1986).
