Kraftwerk was formed in Düsseldorf, West Germany, in 1970 by Ralf Hütter and Florian Schneider, who met studying at the Robert Schumann Hochschule and built their own Kling Klang Studio. Emerging from the experimental krautrock scene before fully embracing synthesizers, vocoders and drum machines, the group became the defining pioneers of electronic pop, with Autobahn (1974) establishing them internationally. Their stark, man-machine image and albums like Computer World (1981) directly shaped electro, hip-hop and techno.
