Born November 15, 1953 in Natchez, Mississippi, O'Neal moved to Minneapolis in his early 20s and joined the funk collective Flyte Tyme alongside keyboardist Jimmy "Jam" Harris and bassist Terry Lewis. When Flyte Tyme evolved into the Prince-backed group The Time, O'Neal was replaced on lead vocals by Morris Day, but he kept his working partnership with Jam and Lewis, who produced his self-titled 1985 solo debut for Tabu/Epic Records.
