Recorded at Ridge Farm Studios in Surrey in March 1982 with new producer Mike Howlett (fresh off OMD and Tears for Fears) and new bassist Sara Lee replacing Dave Allen, Songs of the Free pushed Gang of Four's Marxist funk-punk toward a fuller, more melodic pop sound while keeping its politically pointed lyrics intact on tracks like 'I Love a Man in a Uniform.'
