Gang of Four are an English post-punk band formed in 1976 in Leeds by guitarist Andy Gill and singer Jon King, who met as teenagers at Sevenoaks School before both studying at Leeds University; they were joined by drummer Hugo Burnham and, after two gigs, bassist Dave Allen. Their debut album Entertainment! (1979) fused punk energy with funk rhythms and politically pointed lyrics and is widely ranked among the greatest post-punk records ever made; the band's early-80s albums Solid Gold (1981), Songs of the Free (1982) and Hard (1983) pushed further into dance-punk and disco textures before Allen and then Burnham departed. Rolling Stone's David Fricke called them "probably the best politically motivated band in rock & roll," and their angular, stuttering guitar sound directly influenced acts from Red Hot Chili Peppers to Franz Ferdinand.
