English hard rock/glam metal band formed in Sheffield in 1977, best known for the diamond-certified Pyromania (1983) and the three-years-in-the-making Hysteria (1987), both shaped by producer Robert John 'Mutt' Lange's exacting, layered studio approach. The band's resilience defined its legacy: after drummer Rick Allen lost his left arm in a 1984 car accident, he learned to play on a custom electronic-triggered kit rather than quit, and the band restarted and finished Hysteria around his recovery -- a comeback Lange said he wanted to make 'a hard rock version of Thriller.'
