Formed in Birmingham in 1978 by childhood friends John Taylor and Nick Rhodes (naming themselves after Milo O'Shea's villain in the 1968 film Barbarella), Duran Duran became resident band at the city's Rum Runner nightclub, whose owners took over as managers. The classic 'Fab Five' lineup solidified in mid-1980 with the arrival of Andy Taylor and Simon Le Bon and fused New Romantic glamour, funk basslines and MTV-friendly video style into some of the biggest pop hits of the decade.
