Fields of the Nephilim are an English gothic rock band formed in Stevenage, Hertfordshire in 1984, led by vocalist Carl McCoy. Known for their occult-inspired lyrics, guttural vocal style and Western-desperado stage image shrouded in smoke, they debuted with the EP Burning the Fields (1985) before signing to Situation Two/Beggars Banquet and releasing their debut album Dawnrazor, which topped the UK Indie chart in 1987. AllMusic called them 'the most believable' of Britain's 1980s goth rock bands, and one of the longest-lived of the original scene until McCoy's departure led to the band's 1991 split.
