George Michael (born Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou, 25 June 1963, East Finchley, London, to an English mother and Greek-Cypriot father; died 25 December 2016) was an English singer-songwriter and record producer. He rose to fame as one half of the pop duo Wham! with schoolfriend Andrew Ridgeley, formed in 1981, scoring hits such as "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go" and "Last Christmas." After Wham! split in 1986, Michael launched his solo career with Faith (1987), which sold roughly 10 million copies in the US alone and produced four number-one singles including the title track and "Father Figure," establishing him as a global pop superstar and an important trailblazer for LGBTQ+ recording artists.
