Born Tracy Lauren Marrow on February 16, 1958, in Newark, New Jersey; orphaned young and raised by an aunt in South Central Los Angeles, where he attended Crenshaw High School and became involved with the Crips before turning to rap in the early 1980s, taking his stage name from novelist Iceberg Slim. His 1987 debut Rhyme Pays -- the first hip-hop album to carry a Parental Advisory sticker -- and its 1988 follow-up Power, produced with Afrika Islam, are widely credited alongside Philadelphia's Schoolly D with pioneering West Coast gangsta rap's street-narrative template ahead of N.W.A. He went on to front the metal-rap group Body Count and become a longtime television actor.
