American female rap trio from Rialto, California, formed in 1985 by Juana "MC J.B." Burns as a quintet (the name an acronym of the original members' first initials) inspired by Afrika Bambaataa's "Planet Rock"; internal lineup changes narrowed the group to the trio of Burns, Dania "Baby D" Birks and Michelle "Sassy C" Franklin, backed by DJ Train. Eazy-E discovered their "Supersonic" demo and signed them as one of Ruthless Records' first acts; the re-recorded single, produced by Dr. Dre, DJ Yella and Arabian Prince, sold 400,000 copies independently before a Ruthless/Atco deal pushed the Supersonic album (1988) to RIAA gold and a Grammy nomination -- the first for an all-female rap group.
