English post-punk band formed in Notting Hill, London in 1979 by vocalist/keyboardist Jaz Coleman and drummer Paul Ferguson, who recruited guitarist Geordie Walker (Kevin Walker) and bassist Youth (Martin Glover) via classified ads. Their self-titled 1980 debut fused punk aggression with dub rhythms, tribal percussion and industrial textures, establishing a confrontational sound that went on to influence Metallica, Nirvana and Nine Inch Nails.
