Born April 20, 1951 in New York City and raised in Harlem and the Bronx, Vandross built his career through the 1970s as an in-demand background and jingle singer, touring with David Bowie in 1975 and recording as part of the group Change, before signing to Epic Records in 1981 and releasing his self-produced solo debut Never Too Much that same year.
