Japanese singer-songwriter and record producer born March 20, 1955, in Tokyo. Regarded as one of the pioneering figures of city pop and dubbed the "Queen of City Pop," she debuted in 1978 with the album Beginning while studying at Keio University. Her sixth studio album, Variety (1984), featured "Plastic Love," which became a global viral phenomenon decades after release. Married to fellow city pop artist Tatsuro Yamashita since 1982, she has sold over 16 million records in Japan across a career spanning more than four decades.
