Soft Cell were an English synth-pop duo formed in Leeds in 1977 by Marc Almond (vocals) and Dave Ball (synthesizers), who met as art students at Leeds Polytechnic. Signed to Some Bizzare, they became one of the defining acts of the early-1980s synth-pop movement with their 1981 debut album Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret, whose lead single — a cover of Gloria Jones's 'Tainted Love' — sold more than 21 million copies worldwide and became the UK's second-biggest-selling single of 1981. The duo released two further studio albums, The Art of Falling Apart (1983) and This Last Night in Sodom (1984), before splitting in 1984.
