Formed in London in 1962 around the songwriting partnership of Mick Jagger and Keith Richards (who reconnected as childhood friends via a shared love of Chuck Berry and Muddy Waters records), with guitarist Brian Jones, pianist Ian Stewart, bassist Bill Wyman and drummer Charlie Watts rounding out the classic lineup by early 1963. Marketed by manager Andrew Loog Oldham as the bad-boy alternative to the Beatles, the Stones built their reputation on gritty, blues-driven rock and roll. By the 1980s -- with Ronnie Wood on guitar since 1975 -- the band remained a top stadium draw despite a mid-decade Jagger/Richards rift, delivering Emotional Rescue (1980) and Tattoo You (1981) as commercial peaks of the era.
