American electro-funk and R&B band formed in 1976 at Kentucky State University in Frankfort, Kentucky, by trumpeter Reggie Calloway. The self-contained nine-piece student ensemble was discovered at a 1978 New York City showcase by SOLAR Records chief Dick Griffey. Their breakout third album, No Parking on the Dance Floor (1983), went double platinum and defined the era's synth-funk sound, followed by Planetary Invasion (1984) and the gold-certified Headlines (1986), which spawned the UK top-10 hit "Midas Touch."
